Your Credit Union has occupied the Chamberlain Street site for over 30 years. Built in the early 70’s, the low-profile building was almost hidden on the property. Strong growth led its directors to the conclusion that a building renewal program was in order, to modernize and expand the facility.
Lundy Construction was hired on at the earliest stages of planning in the capacity of Construction Manager and assisted the owner in the selection of an architect. In the months that followed, the 10,000-sf, one storey building (serving only Your Credit Union) was transformed into a 26,000-sf three storey building which accommodates YCU and three tenants.
The crisp exterior design is mirrored inside – and the sweeping interior walls, ceilings and bulkheads conceal state of the art heating, cooling, and electrical systems designed to save dramatically on energy costs.
From the earliest stages, it was the Owner’s wish not to interrupt client services throughout the construction process. With this in mind, Lundy worked closely with designers and city officials to maintain access to the building throughout the entire renewal process.
The occupancy of the building posed significant challenges to the logistics of construction and issues of life safety. Several sections of the building had to be completely dismantled across fire rated barriers, both vertical and horizontal. In this case, temporary fire barriers were constructed or sections of the building blocked off from occupancy. The fire alarm system was reworked over this time. Access and exiting of the building had to be revised as construction progressed. Even the onsite ATM machine had to be carefully protected against vibration. The small down town site had to accommodate construction equipment, material deliveries, staging areas, and parking for YCU employees.
