Space Frame Installation Wows Local Residents
The new Plant Recreation Centre is a redeveloped heritage designated city facility which houses a brand new indoor Olympic sized swimming pool, wading pool, and hot tub. The complex also features upgraded exercise facilities and reception rooms as well as an outdoor facility with basketball and beach volleyball courts, children’s playgrounds, and a splash pad.
The massive Triodetic space frame built to span over this recreation facility’s new swimming area was hoisted into place on October 24, 2003.
The custom designed structure (more than half a football field in size) was pre-assembled on the ground before being lifted into its final position. The frame consists of almost 2000 steel tubes, includes over 600 connectors and weighs-in at 52,000 lbs.
